United ramp up move for Van Gaal successor

Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward has put the wheels in motion to get Jose Mourinho in before the end of the season, according to The Daily Mirror.

The Red Devils were humiliated in the Europa League on Thursday to Danish minnows FC Midtjylland leaving Van Gaal on the brink of being sacked after 18 turbulent months at the Old Trafford helm.

Mourinho is due to be in Milan over the weekend to watch his former side Inter in action, although the former Chelsea manager has already announced he will not be replacing Roberto Mancini at the end of the season.

United have only won nine of their last 27 matches in all competitions and are currently six points adrift of the top four, with Woodward reportedly hopeful of getting Mourinho in before the end of the season as they desperately hope to salvage their season.
