Atletico Madrid confirm Diego Costa return

Atletico Madrid have confirmed they have completed a deal to re-sign Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

The Brazilian-born Spain international only left Atletico to move to England three years ago but he has been pushing for a return to Diego Simeone’s side for the past 12 months.

Costa was convinced to stay at Chelsea by Antonio Conte at the start of last season, but the Italian made it known he was no longer wanted at the club after winning the Premier League title back in May.

Atletico have not confirmed how much they have paid for Costa, nor the length of his contract, but reports suggest the Spanish giants may have shelled out nearly double what they sold him for back in 2014.

“I’m very happy to return home, I’ve always said it, Atletico is my home, I’m very, very happy,” Costa told the club’s official website.

“I’m looking forward to start contributing. I’m going to give my all for the team, as I always try to do.

“The effort that Miguel Angel Gil has made especially, and the whole club for making this move forward, I’m very grateful to everyone.”

Due to the fact Atletico are currently serving a transfer ban, Costa will not be able to make his second debut for the club until January, meaning he will not have played competitive football for seven months.

Costa scored 27 goals in his last league campaign for Atletico, including six in his last nine appearances, while playing an important part in two Premier League-winning campaigns in three years for Chelsea.
