Tottenham have reached an agreement in principle with Ajax for centre back Davinson Sanchez for £42m, reports The Independent.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are the only Premier League side yet to make a single summer signing but they have been locked in talks with Ajax for the last week in a bid to sign the highly rated 21-year-old.
Sanchez turned down Barcelona in order to join Ajax last summer and Tottenham were hopeful of securing his services for a fee in the region of £25m.
However, Ajax have been adamant that Sanchez will only be sold on their terms and that has led Pochettino’s side agreeing to a deal that could potentially shatter their club transfer record.
Tottenham have agreed to pay an initial £28m and could end up paying a further £14m in performance related add-ons, shattering the £30m they paid Newcastle for Moussa Sissoko last summer.
The Colombia international was left out of Marcel Keizer’s squad that took on Rosenborg in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier on Thursday evening and is now due in London to undergo his medical.
Sanchez told Ajax he wanted to join Spurs at the start of the week and would even reject their attempts to offer him a bumper new deal to stay at the club. The young defender has reportedly agreed terms to a five-year deal with Tottenham, but the transfer is unlikely to be completed in time for Sunday’s London derby with Chelsea.
Since the start of last season, Sanchez is the only Eredivisie player that has completed more than 2000 passes (2017).
Cmon Jose, United saw this speedster in the Europa final...and he's just what we need to switch the back to a three man system. Best passer in Europe say the stats for the last five years. Surely Ed Woodward, who has fallen on target short this summer can be persuaded to top the Tots bid by a wide margin. A replay of Lukaku stolen from Chelsea at the last minute. DO IT!
