Manchester United at risk of losing attacker for nothing this summer

Manchester United are running the risk of losing Juan Mata for nothing in the summer when his current deal is due to expire, reports ESPN.

Jose Mourinho’s side have already triggered 12-month contract extensions for Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw but have delayed a decision on Mata’s future.

Mata was widely expected to be sold once Mourinho was appointed United manager in the summer of 2016 but the Spaniard, to his credit, has established himself as a key player for his former Chelsea manager.

However, the 29-year-old’s long-term Old Trafford future remains uncertain and he is currently free to discuss terms for a Bosman transfer with foreign sides.

Mata has started 35 of a possible 61 Premier League matches under Mourinho at United but only managed to play a direct hand in 15 goals (nine goals, six assists) in that period.

However, United do have a far superior win ratio in the league when Mata has started (62.9%) compared to when he hasn’t (42.3%) under the Portuguese.
