Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal running until 2023, the Premier League outfit have announced.
Alonso’s previous deal still had three years left to run but Chelsea have moved to secure his long-term future.
Chelsea were widely ridiculed for signing former Sunderland defender in 2016 but Alonso has been a revelation for the Blues.
Alonso has emerged as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League and there were even suggestions of a move back to boyhood club Real Madrid.
“I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world,” he told the club’s official website.
“It’s been a very good two seasons and I am looking forward to more.”
Alonso has been involved in 21 Premier League goals for Chelsea since August 2016, more than any other defender in the competition.
