Real Madrid sign Hazard from Chelsea

Eden Hazard has joined Real Madrid from Chelsea on a five-year deal running until the summer of 2024, the Spanish side have announced.

Madrid have been pursuing Hazard since the 2018 World Cup and have finally got a deal over the line worth an initial €100m (£89m).

Hazard confirmed his intentions to leave Madrid after Chelsea’s Europa League final win over Arsenal last week and the La Liga giants have been working hard on a deal ever since.

The Belgium international had entered the final 12 months of his current Chelsea deal but the Blues played hardball over the fee for the 28-year-old.

Madrid were hopeful of signing Hazard for a fee closer to £80m but have been forced to break their club transfer record to get a deal over the line.

While the initial fee is £89m, Madrid could pay as much as £130m if all performance related add-ons are met during the duration of his stay at the club.

Hazard is the third summer signing Madrid have made after Luka Jovic and Eder Militao and his arrival has taken the club's spending spree beyond the £200m mark.

Santos teenager Rodrygo also joined Madrid this summer but Los Blancos agreed a £39.9m fee with the Brazilian outfit 12 months ago.

Madrid are not expected to stop there, with Lyon left-back Ferland Mendy and Premier League duo Paul Pogba and Christian Eriksen also on their radar.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham are demanding in excess of £100m for Pogba and Eriksen, while Mendy is expected to set Madrid back another €50m (£44.3m).

Madrid will almost certainly have to sell a number of big name players to balance their books, with the likes of Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Isco up for sale.

Hazard finished last season as the highest WhoScored rated player in the Premier League (7.81) and played a direct hand in more goals than any other player (31).
