Tottenham ace set to double his wages

Tottenham are ready to hand Toby Alderweireld an improved contract that will double his current £50,000-a-week wages, reports The Daily Mail.

Alderweireld, 28, has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since joining Tottenham in 2015 but is one of the few remaining players at the club yet to commit his long-term future.

The Belgium international’s current deal is due to expire in 2019 but Tottenham have an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months, although by doing so Mauricio Pochettino’s side would make a £25m release clause active during the summer of 2019.

Tottenham are confident Alderweireld’s situation will not reach that point and are now in the process of making their star defender one of the highest earners at the club by handing him a new deal that would take out his release clause.

Alderweireld has completed more long balls than any other outfield player in the Premier League this season (167).
