Roma end interest in Riyad Mahrez

Roma have ended their pursuit of Riyad Mahrez after their €35m (£31.7m) bid was rejected by Leicester, claims Sky Italia, via Football Italia.

Leicester are willing to meet Mahrez’s wish to leave the club this summer but are not interested in selling the Algeria international for anything below €40m (£36.2m).

The 26-year-old has already revealed he would like to talk to Roma about a potential transfer but has pledged to give his best for the Foxes until his future is resolved.

However, Roma are not prepared to eclipse what they paid Fiorentina for Gabriel Batistuta in 2000 to make Mahrez the most expensive player in the club’s history and are now exploring alternatives.

Roma have been linked with moves for Real Madrid forward Lucas Vazquez and Juventus winger Juan Cuadrado, as Mahrez’s high profile move away from the King Power Stadium looks to have hit another bump in the road.

Despite the fact Mahrez’s form in the Premier League dipped last season, only Mesut Ozil (37) and Kevin De Bruyne (32) have created more clear-cut chances in the last two league campaigns than Mahrez (30).
