Wilshere returns to the England squad

Gareth Southgate has named Jack Wilshere in the England squad for the first time since Euro 2016.

Wilshere has missed out of the last two squads but has returned to the international set-up after returning to full fitness in recent weeks on loan at Bournemouth.

The 24-year-old joined the Cherries on a season-long loan deal from Arsenal at the start of the season in order to kickstart his career following several years of fitness issues at the Emirates.

Wilshere is still looking to hit the standards expected from him but he has started in seven of Bournemouth’s 11-league games return to the international set-up for upcoming matches against Scotland and Spain.

There is also a return to the squad for Tottenham striker Harry Kane after ending his seven-week absence with his fifth goal in his fourth starts against Arsenal in the North London derby at the weekend.

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate will be looking to maintain his unbeaten run having followed up his 2-0 win over Malta with a 0-0 draw against Slovenia.

Wilshere returns to the England squad

The former England U21 international was given these first four matches to prove his credentials to stake a claim to become the regular manager and their performance against Spain could play a huge part in the FA’s decision.

No player has been denied by the woodwork more times in the Premier League this season than Wilshere (3).
