England have announced Phil Jagielka has withdrawn from the squad to face Malta and Slovenia after sustaining a thigh injury in training.
Interim manager Gareth Southgate has already lost Glen Johnson and Raheem Sterling through injury and the Everton defender has added to the list of casualties.
Jagielka, 34, hasn’t featured in England’s last eight international fixtures and will now play no part in their next two. Unlike in the case of Sterling and Johnson, Southgate has opted against calling up a replacement for the Everton veteran.
No player has completed more headed clearances in the Premier League this season than Jagielka (44).
