Tottenham have re-opened contract talks with Jan Vertonghen and are hopeful of agreeing new terms.
Vertonghen’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and he started the campaign out of the team.
Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to snub Vertonghen during their first few matches appeared to signal the end of his career at the club.
However, Vertonghen believes he could continue playing for Tottenham for the next two years and talks are back underway about a new deal.
“I’m very aware of my age,” Vertonghen told The Daily Telegraph. “I feel fairly young and it [the contract situation] doesn’t distract me.
“I want to play as many games as I can at the highest possible level, that’s what we are doing now and that’s what we are doing [against Bayern Munich on Tuesday].
“I’m very ambitious and I feel I’ve got a couple of good years left in me, that’s definitely how I’m feeling now. I hope I can help the team as long as I can.
“I prefer not to go too deep into that [contract talks with the club], but there’s always some movement everywhere.
“It’s my eighth season now, I had a great past, I’m feeling great at the moment in every single way here.”
Tottenham surprisingly handed Moussa Sissoko, 30, a new four-year contract on Friday but it’s unclear how long a deal they are prepared to offer Vertonghen, who 33 in April.
Vertonghen has started only 26 of a possible 45 league games since the beginning of last season and Tottenham boast almost identical records in that time (57.7% win ratio with him starting compared to 57.9% when he has not featured from the off).
