Townsend wants Spurs stay, claims father

Andros Townsend wants to stay at Tottenham Hotspur and fight for his place, according to his father.

Townsend, 24, has been heavily linked with a move away from White Hart Lane this summer with the likes of Aston Villa reportedly monitoring his situation.

However, he has no desire to leave Spurs this summer and wants to prove himself to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

“Andros’ mind is on Tottenham,” his father, Troy, told Sky Sports News. “He’s grown up at the club and that’s where he wants to be. You can’t stop rumour, there’s been rumour every year around the deadline.

“But he wants to prove himself in Mauricio Pochettino’s team and hopefully that’s what he’ll be given the chance to do.”

A series of injuries limited Townsend to just 17 appearances in the Premier League last season, where he managed a less than impressive WhoScored rating of 6.54.

The England international has become renowned for trying his luck from range and only three of his Spurs teammates averaged more efforts from outside the box per 90 minutes than Townsend in the Premier League last season (1.6).
