Villa appoint Bruce

Aston Villa have appointed former Birmingham City manager Steve Bruce as Roberto Di Matteo’s successor.

Bruce, 55, has been out of work since quitting as Hull City manager before the start of this season.

Villa have been looking for a new manager since sacking Di Matteo at the start of October and have turned to Bruce, who has a history of promoting sides from the Championship to the Premier League.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” Bruce told Villa’s official website. “It is one of the big clubs of this country. To be given the opportunity to manage it is terrific.

“I relish the challenge of trying to take the club where it wants to go and needs to be – and try to turn around the misfortune we seem to have had over the past few years. I am absolutely delighted to have been given the chance. I hope I can do my stuff.”

Bruce has won more promotions to the Premier League than any other manager (Birmingham 01/02, 06/07 & Hull 12/13 & 15/16).
