Chelsea assistant confirms club’s interest in Premier League striker

Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola has dropped a huge hint the club are weighing up a January move for Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri wanted to sign a new No.9 in the summer but failed in his attempt to reunite with Gonzalo Higuain, who instead left Juventus to join AC Milan.

Neither Olivier Giroud nor Alvaro Morata have impressed for Chelsea this season and the Blues have been heavily linked with a January move for Wilson following his terrific form this season.

Wilson, who has suffered two serious knee injuries in the past, is playing the best football of his career and even scored on his England debut earlier in the campaign.

Chelsea will have the chance to take a closer look at Wilson when they take on Bournemouth in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night and Zola has conceded the club are interested in the 26-year-old.

“I’m sure that there are a lot of players linked with us,” the London Evening Standard quote Zola as saying. “Certainly Callum Wilson is doing very well for his club and he is of interest, not just for us, but for many.”

Wilson has scored eight goals and provided five assists in 16 Premier League appearances this season. Furthermore, only four players have created more clear-cut goalscoring chances than Wilson in England’s top-flight this term (8).
