Mourinho still chasing Madrid defender

Jose Mourinho is desperate to add Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane to his Manchester United squad before the transfer window shuts, claims Spanish newspaper AS.

United have already spent nearly £150m this summer after breaking the world record to re-sign Paul Pogba from Juventus and Mourinho has been told he must sell before they can sanction another significant outlay.

Mourinho worked with Varane during his time as Madrid manager and has been continuously linked with reunion with the defender at Old Trafford this summer despite the fact the France international has publically stated his desire to remain with the European Champions.

Since signing from Lens in 2011 Varane has only started more than 15 matches in a season on two occasions as he has struggled for fitness, as well as failing to break the Pepe and Sergio Ramos partnership.
