Tottenham make audacious move for England international

Tottenham have made a formal enquiry to Southampton over former Liverpool striker Danny Ings, claims The Daily Mail.

Ings was a revelation for Southampton last season and finally appears to have overcome the worst of his injury woes.

Jose Mourinho still wants Tottenham to sign a striker before the transfer window closes despite edging closer to re-signing Gareth Bale from Real Madrid.

The Tottenham head coach wants to ease the burden on Harry Kane but finding a player willing to play second fiddle to the England captain has proved nearly impossible in recent years.

Tottenham have gone through a number of strikers in seasons gone by without any success and have seen pursuits of Arkadiusz Milik, Bas Dost, Alexander Sorloth and Ollie Watkins fall short this summer.

Ings has entered the final two years of his £68,000-a-week contract but Southampton rejected Tottenham's approach and insist he is not for sale at any price.

The 28-year-old scored 22 goals in the Premier League last season, finishing just one behind Golden Boot winner Jamie Vardy.

Excluding penalties, only three players scored more goals than Ings (21) in Europe's top five leagues in 2019/20.
