Barcelona star hit with two-game ban

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has been handed a two-game ban for his involvement in an altercation with Espanyol’s players in their fiery Catalonia Derby in the Copa del Rey.

Suarez, 28, is alleged to have threatened opposition players in the tunnel in the wake of Barcelona’s 4-1 win over their neighbourhood rivals.

The Uruguay international’s ban only applies for Copa del Rey matches, but Barcelona have already revealed they will contest the decision.

Barcelona is expected to argue that the player, as he later stated, did not use the allegedly offensive words that were attributed to him in the referee’s official notes following the match,” the club said in a statement.

Luis Enrique’s men eventually ran out comfortable winners in a first-leg that saw two Espanyol players sent off and their goalkeeper fortunate not to follow his teammates off the pitch after camera footage suggested he stamped on Lionel Messi.
