West Ham rekindle interest in La Liga striker

West Ham have rekindled their interest in Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez amid suggestions Marko Arnautovic could be sold this month, reports Sky Sports.

Arnautovic wants to leave West Ham this month after the Hammers received a £35m bid from an unnamed club from China.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side will only sanction Arnautovic’s sale if an improved offer is tabled in excess of £40m and they are already drafting a list of replacements for the 29-year-old.

Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson has already been mooted with a move to the London Stadium but Eddie Howe’s side will reportedly demand in the region of £75m for his signature.

West Ham are now in the process of assessing alternative options and have turned to Gomez after failing to sign the La Liga striker last summer.

Gomez, who has also been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid this month, has a £45m release clause which proved a sticking point for West Ham in discussions before the start of the season.

The Hammers are not willing to spend that much on the 22-year-old but may have no choice if they want to sign someone of his calibre midway through the season.

The Uruguay international has played a direct hand in 14 goals in 17 league appearances for Celta this season (nine goals, five assists), having scored 17 goals and provided four assists the season before.

Gomez is strong in the air, illustrated by the fact only Cristhian Stuani (14) has scored more headed goals in La Liga than the Celta striker (12) since the beginning of last season.
