Gotze to leave Borussia Dortmund

Mario Gotze will leave Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer at the end of the season, the club has confirmed.

The German has struggled for game time due to injuries and a lack of form following his return to the Bundesliga giants in 2016 after a three-year stint with Bayern Munich.

Indeed, Gotze has made just five league starts for Borussia Dortmund this season and Michael Zorc, the club's sporting director, announced that the 27-year-old will leave on a free once the campaign draws to a close.

"I believe this makes sense for both parties," Zorc confirmed via The Evening Standard.

Gotze bagged the 2014 World Cup winning goal, which propelled him into the spotlight to cap a commendable debut season with Bayern Munich.

However, Gotze has failed to match expectations in recent years and, as such, the attacker will be a free agent this summer.

Gotze was named as a sub in Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga meeting with Wolfsburg on Saturday.
