Manchester United boss urges club to smash transfer record for striker

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has urged the club’s board to smash the world record transfer fee for a second successive summer in a bid to sign Tottenham star Harry Kane, reports the Sunday Mirror.

United are desperate to land a striker this summer and are believed to be close to brokering a deal with Real Madrid for the capture of Alvaro Morata.

The Spain international is set to leave the Bernabeu, with United his likely destination, though Mourinho is keen on bringing in another forward ahead of their Champions League return.

Andrea Belotti, Romelu Lukaku and Alexandre Lacazette have all been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, but Mourinho is hoping to land Kane.

The England international scored more goals (29) than any other Premier League player last season and has netted 75 times in the last three top-flight campaigns.

Tottenham are reluctant to lose their talismanic striker, though United will test their resolve with a £100m opening offer for the 23-year-old.

Mourinho has made it clear to the board that he would rather sign Kane than Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been linked with a sensational return to Old Trafford this summer.
