Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Schalke 04 centre-back Joel Matip, reports the Independent.
The Cameroon international’s contract expires at the end of the season and he is unwilling to extend his stay at the Bundesliga side.
As such, Matip is allowed to negotiate a pre-contract with any team across Europe, with Liverpool leading the chase to secure his services.
And now it seems as though Liverpool have landed the 24-year-old, who will reportedly sign a four-year deal at Anfield at the end of the season.
Defence is a key area that requires improvement at Anfield and Jurgen Klopp has identified Matip as a defender needed to solidify the backline.
