Chelsea ace broke wrist against Arsenal

Chelsea defender David Luiz broke his wrist during Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal but continued playing until being sent off, reports The Sun.

Luiz suffered the injury right at the end of the first half after clattering into the advertising hoardings following a clash with Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

The Brazil international reappeared in the second half with bandaging around his wrist before he was shown a straight red card in the dying embers of Chelsea’s stalemate with the Gunners.

Luiz will miss Chelsea’s next three matches through suspension anyway but Antonio Conte might be without his star defender for much longer given the nature of his injury.

However, the good news is that the 30-year-old does not require surgery and has been training in a split, although it’s unlikely he will immediately return to action after serving his ban.

Luiz has been a revelation for Chelsea since returning to Stamford Bridge over 12 months ago and his absence will be a huge loss for Conte’s side, although it should at least give Andreas Christensen the chance to show supporters a glimpse of the future.

Since the start of last season, only three Premier League defenders have completed more accurate long balls than Luiz (178).
