Manchester United will not use Martial to get Alderweireld

Manchester United are not interested in using Anthony Martial to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham this summer, reports ESPN.

Jose Mourinho side have started talks with Tottenham in a bid to sign Alderweireld before the start of the 2018 World Cup next month.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy believes Alderweireld is worth as much as Virgil Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool for £75m in January.

However, Alderweireld’s contract is running down and United are confident of signing the Belgium international in a deal worth £50m.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has earmarked a summer move for Martial after it emerged the France international is considering his future at Old Trafford.

Martial has rejected a contract extension from the club and will seek a move away unless he is given assurances about regular playing time next season.

The 22-year-old is a fan favourite at Old Trafford but has dropped even further down the pecking order since Alexis Sanchez joined at the start of the year.

While United are willing to listen to offers for the United No.11, Mourinho’s side do not want to sell to a Premier League rival and will not consider a swap deal with Tottenham.

Since making his debut for United in 2015, no player has scored more Premier League goals for the club (24), at least seven more than any other team-mate.
