Chelsea are interested in signing Liverpool target Sander Berge from Genk if their FIFA-imposed transfer ban is lifted in time for the January transfer window, reports GOAL.
Berge has emerged as one of the most sought after talents in Europe outside the major leagues and even earned praise from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp earlier this month.
Klopp made a beeline for Berge after Liverpool's 2-1 victory over Genk and offers words of praise to the 21-year-old.
Fans were quick to put two-and-two together, though signing a new central midfielder is not currently a priority for Liverpool.
Instead it has emerged Chelsea are interested in signing Berge in January, as Frank Lampard has been left short in central midfield at times already this season.
Chelsea are currently unable to register new players until the end of the season but hope to have their ban overtunned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Wednesday when their appeal is heard.
N'Golo Kante, Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all experienced spells on the sidelines this season, with the latter still unavailable for Chelsea.
Genk were drawn alongside Napoli, Liverpool and Salzburg in their Champions League group this season and Berge has featured in every minute. He has successfully completed six of eight dribbles in the competition in that time.
