Van Dijk happy at Southampton after failed summer move

Virgil Van Dijk has revealed he is happy at Southampton despite failing to secure a move to Liverpool over the summer.

The Netherlands international was heavily linked with a move to Anfield all summer and even handed in a transfer request in a bid to force through a move to the Merseysiders.

Southampton stripped Van Dijk of the captaincy in the wake of his behaviour and slowly integrated the defender back into the first-team equation this season after denying his wish to leave.

It was only recently that Van Dijk hinted he would revisit a January exit from Southampton but now the 26-year-old insists he is happy at St. Mary’s and no longer dwelling on the past.

“Firstly, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on anything that happened before,” Van Dijk told The Daily Star. “But I am giving 100 per cent for the club. I work hard every day, I help my team-mates, I’m positive and I want to win every game.

“I am happy and that’s the most important thing so we will just see what happens.”

Van Dijk, who missed the second half of last season through injury, is still looking to rediscover his best form after establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League in the last two years.

Of players that have contested at least 75 aerial duels in the Premier League since the start of last season, only Manchester United duo Chris Smalling (76.1%) and Marouane Fellaini (73.6%) have a better success rate than Van Dijk (73.3%).
