Man City break the bank for De Bruyne

Manchester City have shattered their club transfer-record for a second time this summer after wrapping up a reported £57m deal to sign Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, the Premier League club has announced.

De Bruyne, 24, has been heavily linked with a move to the Etihad all summer as Manuel Pellegrini steps up his recruitment drive in a bid to wrestle back the Premier League title from Chelsea.

The City boss’ expenditure has now rocketed past the £100m mark having already landed Nicolas Otamendi (£32m), Raheem Sterling (club-record £49m) and Fabian Delph (£9m), with De Bruyne putting pen to paper on a six-year deal.

"I want to reach the highest level possible as a player and I think the most important thing is that at the end of the season we can be happy and maybe have some titles," De Bruyne told the club's official website.

"I think this is the most important for the club, the players and for the fans of course."

While City’s decision to make the Belgium international the second most expensive player in Premier League history may seem unnecessary to some, their interest is understandable. In fact, no player across Europe’s top 5 leagues made more assists than De Bruyne last season (20).
