Arsenal trigger Vardy release clause

Arsenal have triggered Jamie Vardy's £20m release clause as they look to prise the England international away from Premier League champions Leicester, reports The Guardian.

Vardy enjoyed a superb campaign for Leicester in their title winning season, with his 24 league goals bettered only by Harry Kane (25) in England's top tier last term.

The 29-year-old only recently penned a new deal with the Foxes, but a release clause was inserted into the contract, which Arsenal have now matched.

Arsenal are keen on bolstering their attack line this summer as they launch a full on assault for the title, though a move for Vardy shows a switch in manager Arsene Wenger's transfer policy.

The Gunners are now hoping to push the deal over the line before Euro 2016 kicks off next Friday, with the ball now in Vardy's court as to whether he leaves the King Power Stadium for the Emirates.

Should he opt to depart for Arsenal, he would become the Gunners' second summer signing following the capture of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach.
