David de Gea could be in line for a stunning recall to the Manchester United starting XI that faces Liverpool at the weekend after making his first to the season for Spain on Tuesday.
The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper has been forced to watch United’s first six games of the season from the stands after being dropped by Louis van Gaal following strong links to Real Madrid.
De Gea, 24, had been expected to complete his return to the Spanish capital this summer but saw his move fall through on the last day of the window and is now looking to regain his starting spot in the United XI.
"I felt good out there [in Spain's 1-0 win over Macedonia]," De Gea is quoted by Sky Sports News. "The coach has given me confidence. I am just happy to have played. I wanted to play. I am very grateful to my team-mates who have been superb, and to the manager.
"Now we need to continue to work and let's see if I'm also lucky in my club. My future is going to be the same as it is now. I'm calm, will continue to work and improve.
"In conclusion, I'm enjoying football. I'm happy."
The Spain international hasn’t featured for United since being hooked at half-time during a pre season match against Paris Saint-Germain in July, but could replace Sergio Romero in goal for United after being handed invaluable game time by Spain head coach Vicente del Bosque during their 1-0 win over Macedonia on Tuesday.
Romero, who joined United in the summer, had made a relatively impressive start to life at Old Trafford having kept four clean sheets in his opening five games in all competitions.
However, he was horribly exposed in their first defeat of the season away to Swansea in their last outing and Van Gaal could be tempted to recall last season’s Player of the Year for their mouth-watering clash with Liverpool on Saturday.
