Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has been drafted into the France squad for Euro 2016 after Marseille midfielder Lass Diarra was ruled out by injury, the France Football Federation (FFF) has confirmed, via The Daily Mail.
Diarra, 31, would have started in Didier Deschamps’ midfield three alongside Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi but has left the camp after suffering a knee injury in training.
France have already lost Raphael Varane and Jeremy Mathieu to injury since naming their squad and a lack of defensive cover could really prove the hosts’ undoing as they enter the tournament as favourites.
Schneiderlin has now been called into the squad and is vying for a starting berth with Yohan Cabaye and N’Golo Kante alongside the two aforementioned midfielders.
Of players that attempted at least 75 dribbles last season, only Mousa Dembele (92.2%) did so with a greater success rate than Diarra (84.4%) across Europe’s top five leagues.
