England squad announced: Manchester United ace Shaw returns

Gareth Southgate has announced his first England squad since the 2018 World Cup and there are places for Adam Lallana, Joe Gomez, James Tarkowski, Alex McCarthy and Luke Shaw.

England kick off their UEFA Nations League campaign against Spain at the start of September before playing Switzerland in a friendly three days later.

Southgate has picked 23 players for the two matches and Shaw is a notable inclusion, having last turned out for the Three Lions in March 2017.

The Manchester United left-back has endured a difficult time at club level over the last three years but has made an impressive start to the season in the Premier League.

Shaw is United’s highest WhoScored rated player after three matches (7.32) and has even earned the plaudits from manager Jose Mourinho, whom he has endured a tough relationship.

The 23-year-old has replaced club team-mate Ashley Young in the squad, who has been dropped along with Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill, with the latter announcing their international retirement this week.

With Burnley’s Nick Pope sidelined for the foreseeable future, Southgate has rewarded Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy with his first ever senior England call-up.

Joe Gomez, who missed the 2018 World Cup through injury, has been recalled after an excellent start to the season, while Adam Lallana and James Tarkowski, who were on standby for Russia, are also in.
