Marc Bartra breaks arm in Borussia Dortmund bus attack

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed Marc Bartra underwent surgery on a broken arm suffered in the bomb attack on the team’s bus on Tuesday night.

The Bundesliga giants were forced to postpone the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Monaco after three bombs went off outside the team’s bus less than one hour before they were due to play.

Bartra was the only Dortmund player that suffered significant injury during the blast and the 26-year-old will now miss Wednesday’s re-arranged match after undergoing surgery on a broken radial bone in his arm.

“Borussia Dortmund defender Marc Bartra underwent an operation on Tuesday night after breaking the radial bone in his arm and getting bits of debris lodged in his hand as a result of the bomb attack on the BVB team bus,” a statement read on Dortmund’s official website.

“We’re all in shock and our thoughts are with Marc,” captain Marcel Schmelzer added. “We hope that he will make a speedy recovery. The prevailing mood in the Black and Yellow camp seems to be ‘to play the match tomorrow for Marc.”

Bartra had started all seven of Dortmund’s Champions League matches prior to tonight’s rescheduled tie and his absence will be a loss for Thomas Tuchel’s side as they bid to overcome a free-scoring Monaco side.

In fact, no player has completed more tackles and interceptions combined in the Champions League for Dortmund this season than Bartra (35).
