Sunderland defender pens new deal

Sunderland have announced Patrick van Aanholt has put pen to paper on a new four-year deal keeping him at the club until at least 2020.

Van Aanholt, still had two years left to run on the original deal he signed when he made the switch from Chelsea permanent in 2014 but has been rewarded for his strong finish towards the end of last season.

The Dutch left-back improved following Sam Allardyce’s arrival at the club and played a big part in Sunderland’s bid to avoid relegation last season.

“Patrick was an outstanding performer last season, contributing not only solid defensive performances, but also assists and vital goals,” Allardyce told Sunderland’s official website.

“It is fantastic to be able to secure the long-term services of such a talented footballer and athlete, who will hopefully continue to improve here for many years to come.”
