Manchester United still in pursuit of Newcastle midfielder Longstaff

Manchester United are closing in on a £25m deal for Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, claims the ESPN.

Longstaff has been earmarked as a top transfer target by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the United manager sets to work rebuilding the club’s midfield options.

The 21-year-old only has eight Premier League starts to his name and is currently recovering from a knee injury suffered in March.

Longstaff only recently reaffirmed his commitment to Newcastle and appeared to turn down United’s interest, but the Red Devils are convinced he wants to join them.

Solskjaer wants United to stop signing big name players and focus on recruiting young, ambitious talents.

United have already signed Daniel James in an £18m transfer this summer and are now looking at wrapping up deals for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Longstaff.

The Newcastle midfielder made a positive impact in the first-team after working his way into Rafa Benitez’s plans prior to injury.

Longstaff pushed Jonjo Shelvey down the pecking order and Newcastle won half of the eight league matches he started.
