United step up hunt for Rooney replacement

Manchester United will pursue their interest in Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann, reports the Sunday Mirror.

The Premier League side are hoping to secure the services of the Frenchman as they look to bolster their attack and build a team without Wayne Rooney.

Rooney has been on the peripheries of the United first team in recent weeks, with his place in the starting XI no longer guaranteed.

United boss Jose Mourinho has been supportive of Rooney during his time at the Old Trafford helm, but he doesn’t see a long term future for the England international at the club.

Griezmann, 25, recently penned a new deal for Atletico Madrid, tying him to the club until 2021, but United are willing to spend around £80m to sign the talented striker, who has scored the joint-most goals (6) in La Liga this season.
