Inter have announced they have sacked Stefano Pioli with three games of the season remaining.
Pioli was only appointed Inter head coach at the start of November to succeed Frank de Boer following the club’s poor start to the season.
The 51-year-old’s arrival had an immediate impact at the club and Inter even won nine games in a row across all competitions over the festive period.
Inter invested heavily in the summer and were expected to challenge for a top four finish at the start of the season, but their campaign has unravelled since pulling off a shock 7-1 win over Atalanta at the start of March.
The Serie A giants are now winless in seven matches and have fallen to defeat on five occasions in that run, leaving the club with a real challenge to qualify for next season’s Europa League.
Inter are currently seventh and nine points adrift of the top five with three games remaining, but would still qualify for the Europa League next season if they can overcome a three-point deficit and finish above AC Milan, who currently occupy sixth.
This is because both Lazio and Juventus, who are due to face each other in the Coppa Italia final at the start of June, are already guaranteed European football next season, which means the extra European space will be given to sixth.
However, the man elected to replace Pioli will have to revert Inter’s incredible slump in form. Only Pescara are on a current longer winless streak in Serie A than Inter (7) as it stands.
