Manchester United’s chances of signing Spanish defender Sergio Ramos have been strengthened after the 29-year-old told Real Madrid he wanted to leave the club and join the Premier League outfit.
It had been unclear whether Ramos was simply using United as a bargaining chip for a better contract, but he has now told Florentino Perez of his intentions to leave after learning United submitted a €40m (£28.6m) bid for his services.
The arrival of Ramos would be a real message of intent from United and also provide them with goals from the back. Only John Terry (22) has scored as many goals as the Spaniard across the top 5 European leagues in the last six seasons.
However, United will be hoping that Ramos has curbed his erratic temperament. No player has received more red cards (15) in La Liga since he joined Madrid a decade ago, although you would have to trace back until March 2014 to find the last time the defender was sent off in the league.
