Manchester United announce first signing of the summer
Manchester United have announced they have completed a deal to sign Benfica defender Victor Lindelof on an initial four-year deal until 2021 with an option to a further 12 months.
Jose Mourinho’s side announced they had reached an agreement with Benfica last week but were waiting for Lindelof to complete his international duty with Sweden before the versatile defender could complete a medical and sign his contract.
The 22-year-old arrived at United’s training ground on Wednesday morning before going through the various procedures and he is now looking to win major silverware at one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“I am thrilled to be joining Manchester United,” he told the club’s official website. “I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot there.
“But I’m looking forward to playing in the Premier League at Old Trafford and for Jose Mourinho. I’m keen to get started and make my contribution to the team’s efforts to win more trophies.”
Lindelof is the first new face through the door at United this summer but his arrival is expected to offset Chris Smalling’s departure after being made available for transfer by Mourinho as a result.
The England international could be available for as little as £15m with the likes of Everton, Newcastle and West Brom reportedly interested in the United defender.
In the Portuguese Liga NOS last season Lindelof attempted more passes than any other defender (1991).
