Barcelona defender tipped for Premier League move

Barcelona utility man Javier Mascherano is considering his future at the Camp Nou and could return to the Premier League in the summer, according to El Confidencial, via The Daily Mirror.

Mascherano, 31, is reportedly unhappy that Barcelona have not backed him enough during his run-in with the Spanish tax authorities that ended with the former Liverpool midfielder being handed a years suspended jail sentence and a hefty fine.

The Argentina international has a release clause of £79m, which no club is likely to pay. However, interest could be perked in the Premier League if he is obtainable on a cut-price deal.

Despite being a midfielder by trade, Mascherano has proven an unlikely rock at the heart of Barcelona’s defence since making the switch from Liverpool in 2010. In fact, only Sergio Busquets (1,581) has played more accurate passes for Barcelona in La Liga this season than Mascherano (1,401).
