Chelsea prepared to pay £25m for ex-United defender

Chelsea will step up their interest in Burnley defender Michael Keane and bid £25m in January as Roman Abramovich looks to bankroll a squad overhaul following their underwhelming start to the season, reports The Daily Mirror.

Premier League champions Leicester failed in their attempts to sign Keane in the summer and Burnley are hopeful of offering the former Manchester United youth product a new contract in a bid to fend off interest in the future.

Chelsea’s defence has come in for immense scrutiny in recent weeks after shipping seven goals in their last three league matches and Antonio Conte has reportedly identified Keane as the ideal replacement for captain John Terry, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Since the start of last season Keane has only missed three minutes of league football for Burnley from a possible 4,440.
