West Brom ace signs new deal

West Brom have announced Gareth McAuley has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal keeping him at the club until the end of next season.

McAuley’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season but the centre-back, who turns 38 in December, has shown no signs of relenting after enjoying a fantastic season for Tony Pulis’ side.

The Northern Ireland international has been a pillar of consistency for West Brom this season and has also proven a real offensive weapon from set-pieces.

“It’s very pleasing,” McAuley told the club’s official website. “I’d like to thank the club, the gaffer and everyone here who helps me to stay fit to be able to play at this level.

“It’s very, very pleasing. When I signed I just wanted to play in the Premier League and I knew that wasn’t a given when I came here. But I’ve still got that desire sitting here today.

“I don’t think that will leave me. It’s a good thing because it keeps you motivated, keeps you pushing forward.”

West Brom only need seven points from their remaining nine matches to set a new club record for points in a Premier League campaign, surpassing the 49 they set under Steve Clarke in 2013 and McAuley has been integral to their season thus far.

In fact, only James Milner and Sergio Ramos (both 7) have scored more goals in Europe’s top five leagues of all defenders than McAuley (6).
