Everton wantaway star Romelu Lukaku has revealed he wants to leave Goodison Park in order to add trophies to all the goals he is scoring.
Ronald Koeman’s side have been locked in contract talks with the Belgium international since last summer but have been left stunned at Lukaku’s sudden u-turn and refusal to sign a new deal.
Everton were prepared to offer Lukaku a club record £130,000-a-week contract to end questions about his future but their reluctance to include a £90m release clause has contributed in the striker’s desire to leave at the end of the season.
A deal to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge seems to the most likely way out for Lukaku, and the former Chelsea striker has revealed winning silverware is the main reason why he wants to make the next step in his career.
“Everton as a club have a great history, right?” Lukaku told The Daily Mail. “But the future has to be written. You get me? We always talk about the teams of the 1980s and, if you look, it was great. But we, as players, want the fans talking about us instead of us talking about them. No disrespect but you know what I mean?
“You cannot only be remembered by scoring goals. You want to be remembered by winning trophies. That is what the fans want. So instead of living in the past, you have to think ahead.
“How this club has to grow, how this club has to improve. Which player does it want to bring in so you can challenge for the big trophies. Sometimes I speak to Vincent Kompany, who was at Manchester City when it all happened. He said, “Rom, one summer I just came in and boom, boom, boom… Robinho from there, this guy came in, this guy came in.
“Everyone was criticising them but, at the end, there are two league titles, FA Cup here, League Cups there. That is what we want as players.”
Lukaku has established himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League since joining Everton on a permanent deal worth £28m from Chelsea in 2014 and another significant amount of money now looks set to pass hands for his signature this summer.
The 23-year-old is the joint top goalscorer in the Premier League this season (19) and is only one goal shy of becoming the first Everton player to reach 20 goals in a league campaign since Gary Lineker.
