Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has ruled Adam Lallana out of contention for Gareth Southgate’s first England squad through injury.
Lallana, 28, limped off midway through the first half of Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Swansea before walking straight down the tunnel with what Klopp confirmed after the match was a groin injury.
Southgate, who was placed in interim charge of England after Sam Allardyce’s dismissal last week, is due to announce his first squad for matches against Malta and Slovenia on Sunday, but Lallana will not be part of his plans.
“Adam felt it, tried it again and it didn’t work,” Klopp told Liverpool’s official website. “In this moment they [Lallana and Dejan Lovren] have no chance for the national teams.
“But hopefully 16 days should be enough to bring them back on the pitch.”
Only Diego Costa (8) has scored or assisted more goals in the Premier League this season than Lallana (6).
