Zlatan Ibrahimovic has confirmed he will retire from international football after Euro 2016 and not take part in the Olympics in August.
The 34-year-old had been included in Sweden’s preliminary squad for the Olympics in Rio, which would rule him out for the whole of August.
Ibrahimovic is out-of-contract at the end of the month when his deal with Paris Saint-Germain expires but is widely expected to join Manchester United this summer and reunite with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.
Sweden have failed to win any of their opening two matches at Euro 2016 and must beat Belgium on Wednesday in order to have any chance of progressing into the knockout phase of the competition.
Ibrahimovic has struggled in the competition, although he hasn’t been helped by the substandard squad he is attempting to haul through the tournament and he has confirmed he will call time on his international career after Sweden’s participation came to an end.
“I will not participate in the Olympics,” Ibrahimovic announced at Sweden’s pre-match press conference.
“I want to thank all the supporters who have helped me to achieve what I have done. Wherever I go, I will always take with me the Swedish flag and be proud of it. I will never be disappointed. So thanks to all.”
Ibrahimovic has scored 62 goals in 115 appearances for Sweden since debuting in 2001.
