Spurs deny €30m release clause in Alderweireld’s contract
Tottenham have denied Toby Alderweireld has a €30m (£25.4m) release clause in his contract, reports The Daily Mirror.
Alderweireld, 27, has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since making the switch from Southampton in 2015 in a deal worth £11.5m.
However, it was claimed on Monday night by the controversial Football Leaks that Alderweireld had a fixed release clause included in the five-year deal he penned when he joined from Southampton.
If true, Tottenham can expect a wave of interest for the Belgium international, with the release clause set well below the going rate for world-class players in the current market.
Alderweireld hasn’t feature for Spurs since suffering knee damage in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with West Brom on October 15, although is expected to return to the team for Sunday’s trip to Manchester United, a team that would certainly be interested in his services.
Tottenham have suffered in Alderweireld’s absence this season. In fact, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have won more than half of the league games the Belgian has started since the start of last season (52.2%) compared to just 33.3% of the matches in which he has been unavailable to start.
