Mitrovic hits out at Napoli talk

Aleksandar Mitrovic has ruled out a January exit to Napoli and wants to fire Newcastle United back to the Premier League.

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with an £18m move to Napoli in recent weeks as the Italian side look to bolster their offensive options with Arkadiusz Milik ruled out for the foreseeable future.

Mitrovic has divided opinion at Newcastle since joining from Belgian giants Anderlecht in 2013 in a deal worth £13m, but is only focused on taking the Magpies back to England’s top tier.

“But I am in Newcastle and I want to come back to the Premier League,” Mitrovic told The Daily Mail. “We are in a good way, I am just focusing on Newcastle and I want to score goals for them.

“We have a few big games coming up. We have Leeds, Hull, Blackburn so they are tough games. But we know what we want from the season.

“We have to keep working hard to try and stay at the top until the end of the season. With the players we have we should be at the top.”

Mitrovic hasn’t been a regular starter under Rafa Benitez and the signing of Dwight Gayle over the summer has only reduced his first team opportunities. With Benitez opting to use a 4-4-1-1 in 14 of their 16 matches, Mitrovic has largely played as reserve to Gayle, starting just three league games compared to Gayle’s 12.

Despite the fact the Serbia international has been used sparingly this season, he has still weighed in with three goals and two assists from his eight appearances.
