Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will be sidelined for four months following surgery on a thigh injury.
Kompany, 30, has been dogged with injuries this season that have limited him to 13 league appearances.
The Belgium international lasted only 10 minutes against Real Madrid in their Champions League semi-final second leg before breaking down with another muscle problem that has subsequently ruled him out of the Euros in the summer.
The City defender is now expected to miss the first month of next season casting doubt over his future under incoming manager Pep Guardiola.
“There will be an operation. Then there’s a period of relative rest to let everything heal. Then you have the active phase. It will take about four months to get Vincent match-fit again,” the doctor, Lieven Maesschalck, told Belgium’s Radio 1, via Marca.
City’s win ratio in the league with Kompany in the starting XI is marginally better (53.8%) compared to their success without him (50%).
