Teenage sensation considered for shock England call-up

Manchester City teenager Phil Foden is being considered by Gareth Southgate for a shock England call-up for matches against Spain and Switzerland next month, claims The Sun.

England play their first UEFA Nations League match against Spain at the start of September before facing Switzerland in a friendly three days later.

Southgate has been travelling the country since the start of the new Premier League campaign in a bid to finalise his squad for their first matches since the 2018 World Cup.

The Three Lions boss has spoken at length with City manager Pep Guardiola about Foden’s development and is considering the 18-year-old for his squad.

Foden inspired England’s U17’s to World Cup glory in 2017 and was named the best player at the tournament after scoring twice in a 5-2 win over Spain in the final.

The teenage midfielder only earned his first cap for the England U19’s earlier this year but Southgate could fast-track his progress to the seniors.

Foden is regarded as one of the brightest talents in English football and got his first minutes of the new Premier League campaign against Huddersfield last weekend.

The City youngster got eight minutes at the end of their 6-1 win over the Terriers, but did provide an assist in a 76-minute performance in the Community Shield win over Chelsea at the start of the month.

He is yet to start a Premier League game, making only six substitute appearances since the start of last season and an England call-up would be a sensational step in his development.
