Bayern Munich close to resigning former striker

Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed Sandro Wagner is closing in on a sensational return to Bayern Munich.

Wagner made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern a decade ago but failed to establish himself in the first team before leaving 12 months later.

The 29-year-old has bounced around several Bundesliga clubs since then but has finally settled at Hoffenheim in the last 17 months.

Wagner even won his first senior cap for Germany earlier this year and has since netted five times in seven appearances, including against France earlier this week.

However, Nagelsmann has now confirmed that the Hoffenheim ace is close to returning to his boyhood club as back up striker to Robert Lewandowski.

“It’s right, and we’ve known that for longer than yesterday,” Nagelsmann told a news conference on Thursday.

“We are aware of his interest [in a move]. We will make an announcement if there’s something to announce.

“There are no grudges that he’s interested, but there is sympathy. It’s not my player, he belongs to the club. If the clubs reach an agreement, you try to compensate for things as a coach."

Since August 2015, only four strikers have scored more Bundesliga goals than Wagner (29).
