The Blues are expected to delve into the market in the off-season as they look to bring in a new frontman, with the likes of Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

However, despite signing Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku from Villarreal and RB Leipzig, respectively, last year, Chelsea are believed to have launched an optimistic approach to sign Nunez.

The Reds, though, rebuffed Chelsea's efforts to sign the Uruguay international, who has scored nine times and provided an additional seven assists in the Premier League this season.

The 24-year-old may face Chelsea this weekend in Sunday's Carabao Cup final with the first piece of domestic silverware up for grabs.

However, Nunez will be assessed ahead of the game at Wembley owing to a knock sustained in the 4-1 win at Brentford last weekend.

The Uruguayan, Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai all face fitness tests to determine their availability against Chelsea.

Nunez made history when Liverpool beat Chelsea 4-1 last month as he fired off 11 shots at Anfield and struck the woodwork four times, a record in a Premier League match.
