Tottenham extend defender’s contract

Tottenham have exercised their right to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract by another year.

The Belgian’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the season, but Spurs have extended that until 2020.

However, it means that Alderweireld is permitted to leave the club during the summer transfer window provided that his transfer is completed 14 days before the close of the window for a fee of £25m.

“The Club can confirm that we have activated the option to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract until 2020,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

“The Belgium international defender has made 135 appearances for us to date since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

“Capped 88 times by his country, Toby began his professional career with Eredivisie side Ajax before moving to Madrid in 2013. His first introduction to the Premier League came during a season-long loan at Southampton in 2014/15 prior to joining us.”

The 29-year-old has started 19 of 21 Premier League games this season and has made more accurate long balls (147) than any other outfield player thus far.
